Checking Your Own Skin for Skin Cancer

Acne happens when hair follicles (pores) become blocked. Four factors drive nearly every breakout: excess oil (sebum) production, dead skin cells clogging the pore, a bacterium called Cutibacterium acnes, and inflammation. When these combine, you get whiteheads, blackheads, pimples, or deeper cysts.

Common triggers that worsen acne

Hormones are the biggest driver — which is why acne spikes in the teen years, before periods, and during times of stress.

Other contributors include certain skincare and makeup products (look for "non-comedogenic" on labels), friction from helmets, phones, or masks, some medications, and genetics.

Diet may play a role for some people: there is no single "acne diet," but limited, emerging evidence links high-glycemic (high-sugar) diets and dairy — particularly skim milk — to breakouts in some individuals. The evidence isn't strong enough for a firm recommendation.

What does not cause acne

Acne is not caused by poor hygiene or "dirty skin." Over-washing and harsh scrubbing actually make it worse by irritating the skin barrier.

FAQ

Does chocolate cause acne?

There's no strong evidence chocolate itself causes acne, though high-sugar diets may worsen it for some people.

Can stress cause acne?

Yes — stress raises hormones that increase oil production and inflammation.

Why do I still get acne as an adult?

Adult acne is common and usually hormonal, especially in women. It deserves the same evaluation as teen acne.
